Is this a t-word?\u201d \u201cYes!\u201d \u201cT, t, t, bus. Is this a t-word?\u201d \u201cNo!\u201d But then came an interesting one. \u201cT, t, t, train. Is this a t-word?\u201d \u201cNo!\u201d Both girls did not hesitate. The teacher, of course, corrected the girls, \u201cListen carefully. T, t, train. Now, is this a t-word?\u201d The girls took the hint and agreed with the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But anyone who studied phonetics and phonology would know that \u201ct\u201d in \u201ctrain\u201d is a palatalized t, which is phonetically distinct from the \u201ct\u201d pronounced alone, which is an aspirated \u201ct\u201d (used in \u201ctop\u201d). So the girls were right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I suppose, for the sake of phonics, the girls need to learn to ignore the difference between an aspirated t and a palatalized t (and an unaspirated t), so they need to be corrected, even though they were right. I didn\u2019t say anything during or after my observation because I didn\u2019t think anyone could appreciate it. But I am sharing this observation with my blog readers.
