2024 ESP Symposium
hosted by CUE SIG and the Iwate-Aomori Chapter
This year marks the 7th biennial College and University Educators (CUE) event uniting researchers and practitioners who are involved in tertiary education in Japan. This all-poster event focuses on English for Specific Purposes (ESP), which encompasses teaching English for any specific profession or academic discipline, including business, medicine, nursing, law, among many others.
This year, we are excited to have two keynote presentations. Leigh McDowell (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) will speak on “Teaching English for Research Publication Purposes in Japan,” and Mellisa Ogasawara and Chris Horne (both from Aomori University of Health and Welfare) will speak on “Tailoring ESP Courses to Student Needs: Enhancing learning through resource development.”

Poster presenters have an option to publish in the OnCUE Journal Special Issue, the proceedings for the symposium. A sample issue can be found here: https://jaltcue.org/ocjsi/vol2 Alternatively, the CUE Circular takes 1,000-word-long articles regularly on pedagogical topics including ESP (with a new section for student authors): https://jaltcue.org/cuecircular CUE welcomes first-time presenters, whether they are native English speakers or not! The COVID years prevented good turnouts even online, but we’re back for this in-person event on September 21, 2024 at Iwate University.
Now registration is open for both the symposium and the symposium dinner.
